« Après Camus et Sartre, je continue, avec Brecht, à explorer un théâtre de l’engagement, et plus particulièrement, avec cette pièce (écrite en 1940 en Finlande mais créée en 1948 à Zurich), le théâtre de l’après-guerre. Maître Puntila et son valet Matti est une comédie, revendiquée comme telle par Brecht qui recommandait de la jouer dans le registre farcesque. C’est la pièce qu’il a choisie pour fonder le Berliner Ensemble, en 1951, signant par elle son retour dans sa langue et son pays. Cette pièce n’est pas didactique, mais conjugue plutôt fable populaire et fable sur l’humain. Il y est question de la dualité (celle du maître et du valet d’abord), mais aussi de l’aliénation et du rapport au travail. Il y est aussi question des modalités de la prise de parole : comment parle-t-on, comme se tait-on ? C’est aussi une pièce qui présente quatre figures féminines très touchantes, qui sont les seules femmes libres et autonomes de l’œuvre de Brecht. Brecht est difficile à entendre aujourd’hui, tout simplement parce que nous connaissons la fin de l’Histoire ! Mais ce problème s’efface devant le plaisir de raconter une histoire : celle de Puntila et Matti, un homme ivre, fou et violent du pouvoir qu’il a, et son valet et chauffeur, homme libre qui conduit souterrainement les événements de la pièce. »
