C’est en Finlandeen 1940 où Brecht est exilé qu’il écrit Maître Puntila et son valet Matti. Une justification à la localisation de l’intrigue et aux noms pittoresques finnois dont le réfugié politique fait usage. Pour le dramaturge allemand, attentif à la lutte marxiste des classes, le sujet – la relation de maître à valet – est sérieux, et remonte à l’aube des temps, depuis l’origine du théâtre antique jusqu’à des temps post-modernes, porteurs de traces d’utopies révolutionnaires plus ou moins accomplies. Ce couple social est l’objet d’un traitement bouffon de la part de Brecht, une manière apparemment désinvolte mais révélatrice des mécanismes des rapports de force en vigueur, conditionnés par les stratégies hiérarchiques. Sur la scène, l’arrogance de maître Puntila et la clairvoyance de son valet Matti, un frottement que vient entraver dans des liens déjà difficiles l’alcoolisme chronique du premier. Le maître, est-il bon ou bien méchant ? Le valet, n’est-il que chauffeur ou bien homme ? Quand il est ivre, Puntila, propriétaire de biens et de forêts, sait être humain et charmant avec ses sujets administrés, ouvriers, paysans et femmes qu’il trompe allègrement. En homme faible, il se fiance collectivement avec ses victimes.
Il n’y aura de meilleur maître que quand chacun sera le sien.
Quand il n’a pas bu, Puntila est méprisant, malhonnête, injuste et grossier. On ne peut jamais saisir la vérité de son être. Seul, le valet reste constant et sans illusion dans la distance qu’il installe délibérément entre eux. Se méfiant des faux enthousiasmes et des amitiés déguisées de son patron, il n’accorde sa foi qu’aux réalités économiques et sociales de ce monde. Pas de salut pour les déshérités. Le pacte d’amitié ne peut être qu’un faux contrat. Il n’y aura de meilleur maître que quand chacun sera le sien, telle est la raison pratique. Omar Porras tire la pièce du côté du baroque et de la grandiloquence des jeux de scène avec son attirail de calembours, d’équivoques et de gros comique. Les puissants de ce monde sont ridiculisés à souhait, propriétaire foncier, juge, jeune attaché ambitieux jusqu’à la jeune fille de la maison dont on aurait pu croire que la révolution passerait par elle puisqu’elle tombe amoureuse du chauffeur de son père. Or, le monde reste monde, engagé dans des relations irréversiblement duelles et chaotiques. Une fresque caricaturale et enlevée, investie de pantins humains manipulés sous le regard cocasse de Porras. Saluons Juliette Plumecocq-Mech dans le rôle de Matti et Jean-Luc Couchard en Puntila. Une farce colorée, mais prisonnière de ses dénonciations caricaturales.
