Librement inspiré d’un roman de l’auteure russe Julia Voznesenskaya, Maman Blues croise les paroles de quatre femmes que rien ne prédisposait à se rencontrer : Zina, une zonarde, Emma, une femme de théâtre, Nahéma, une femme noire et musulmane, Esther, une Israélienne amoureuse d’un palestinien. « Loin de les étouffer, leur enfermement va les révéler à elles-mêmes, explique Jean]Marc Galéra. Elles vont apprendre, grâce à la confrontation de leurs singularités, l’écoute et la tendresse, et se préparer à leur rôle de mère. » Envisageant cette chambrée comme « un sas de décontamination des préjugés, un laboratoire où observer l’anatomie des comportements, des passions et des sentiments », le metteur en scène a conçu une représentation sans artifice au sein de laquelle ces quatre femmes partagent « l’amour, la violence, la honte et le désir qui les animent ».
