« Considérons les cauchemars d’Arne Lygre, dit Jean-Philippe Vidal, ils sont aussi les nôtres ! » La pièce du jeune auteur norvégien s’étend sur soixante ans, repose sur une construction dramaturgique complexe (« faite d’échos, de répétitions, de ressassements »), et oblige « à inventer des solutions théâtrales pour répondre aux défis » qu’elle lance et aux « libertés formelles » qu’elle prend. Six personnages, joués par trois comédiens, composent trois générations d’une même famille, où les femmes héritent des blessures de leurs mères et les transmettent à leurs filles. Le sujet de la pièce est l’inassouvissement et l’incapacité à faire coïncider ses désirs avec le réel, manque cruel dont le motif se reproduit en héritage, dépasse ceux qu’il afflige et pèse sur eux comme un destin. Chez Gudrun (la mère), Liv (la fille) et Gudrun (prénommée comme sa grand-mère), la méfiance vis-à-vis des hommes, la haine de la féminité et de la sexualité sont congénitales et la folie vient cimenter l’incapacité à s’appartenir. Impuissantes à dépasser le passé, ces figures malheureuses sont condamnées à « bégayer leur histoire », comme toujours dans la tragédie.
