DRAME MUSICAL / OPERA COMIQUE
Ecrit par Schumann pour comédiens, solistes vocaux, chœurs et orchestre symphonique, Manfred ne vise pas la perfection formelle mais l’expression démesurée des souffrances hallucinées d’un archétype du romantisme le plus sombre. Byron lui-même affirmait haïr le théâtre et son poème dramatique semblait impropre à la transposition scénique. Cela n’a pas tempéré les ardeurs de Schumann, qui était reconnu en tant que grand compositeur mais pas dans le domaine de l’opéra. Troublé par les correspondances entre sa vie et celle de Byron, qu’il lisait depuis l’adolescence, Schumann s’identifiait sans doute aussi au personnage de Manfred, épris de la défunte Astarté. Georges Lavaudant relève le défi de porter à la scène cette œuvre hybride de « théâtre mental », à partir d’une adaptation que Carmelo Bene réalisa pour la Scala de Milan en 1979. Comment montrer aujourd’hui ce mal de vivre et cette soif d’absolu ? De la fosse, Emmanuel Krivine dirige La Chambre Philharmonique et le chœur Les Eléments.
