Pour la comédienne et metteure en scène Manon Montel, monter des classiques au théâtre est un moyen idéal pour rassembler les deux éléments qui d’après Victor Hugo – elle a adapté Les Misérables et le cite volontiers – passionnent la foule : le grand et le vrai. Après Horace, Le Cid ou encore Dom Juan, elle jette son dévolu sur Roméo et Juliette. Dans son adaptation, seuls restent six personnages de la tragédie shakespearienne : les deux héros éponymes – elle-même incarne Juliette –, Mercutio, Tybalt, la nourrice et Frère Laurent. La musique composée par Jean-Baptiste des Boscs est le septième ingrédient essentiel de ce concentré shakespearien. Elle souligne la question importante du rythme, du temps dans la pièce. Selon Manon Montel, « combattre la fatalité c’est combattre le temps. Tout arrive trop tôt ou trop tard. Le hasard semble se jouer ironiquement des desseins des hommes ».
