Que des metteurs en scène de théâtre approchent l’opéra est devenu une affaire banale. Ce n’est pas encore le cas pour ceux qui viennent du monde du cinéma, pourtant tout autant fondés à apporter au genre une expression renouvelée car ils exercent eux aussi un regard aiguisé et sélectif sur les méandres du récit. Il est intéressant de constater que ce sont plutôt les tourments romantiques de l’âme qui à l’opéra motivent les cinéastes. En 2010, Benoît Jacquot signait ainsi la mise en scène de Werther de Massenet, unanimement saluée comme une réussite. Coline Serreau quant à elle a déjà mis en scène divers ouvrages. On aurait pu l’imaginer s’emparer d’un opéra au fort contenu social, mais ce sera Le Barbier de Séville de Rossini (qui n’en est certes pas exempt) puis La Chauve-Souris de Johann Strauss, deux spectacles pétillants, sensibles et délicieusement efficaces. Aujourd’hui, revenant à l’Opéra Bastille (avant la reprise du Barbier en mai), elle y transporte, comme Benoît Jacquot, les personnages romanesques de Massenet, ceux ici de Manon empruntés par le compositeur et ses librettistes à l’œuvre de l’Abbé Prévost. Pour cette histoire d’une vie qui passe comme un rêve, elle pourra compter sur une distribution de haut vol, de chanteurs qui savent jouer, à commencer par Natalie Dessay dans le rôle-titre.
