Impossible de parler de Manu Codjia comme d’une découverte. Son nom est déjà
depuis quelques années sur toutes les lèvres dans la petite planète jazz. Formé
au CNSM de 1993 à 1998, il obtient (entre autres) dès 1999 un premier prix de
soliste au Concours de La Défense en 1999. Personne n?a pu oublier la guitare
incandescente entendue au sein des groupes Baby Boom de Daniel Humair, Strada
Sextet d’Henri Texier ou d’Erik Truffaz. Autant de géants du jazz européen qui
ont marqué profondément son évolution. Codjia s’émancipe aujourd’hui de ses
glorieux aînés en signant son premier album en leader : « Songlines » chez Bee
Jazz/Abeille. Un passage à l’acte déterminant, sanctionné par un résultat
somptueux. Il a signé toute la musique du disque en optant pour une formule
dépouillée guitare-basse-batterie, dynamitée par une rythmique supersonique
composée de Daniel Humair (qui fut son prof au CNSM) et François Moutin. L’album
est conçu comme un « laboratoire » de combinaisons sonores, nourries des phrasés
et codes du jazz, du rock, du reggae et l’électro. Mille mondes sonores en un.
