« Quand je joue du jazz, on me dit que je viens du rock ; et quand je joue dans des projets rock, on parle de moi comme du « batteur de jazz Manu Katché ». En fait, je suis juste un type essayant d’être soi-même et d’être le plus créatif dans ce qu’il fait » résume le batteur Manu Katché. Star mondiale et tout terrain de son instrument, Manu Katché est célèbre pour sa collaboration avec les plus grands noms du rock (Sting, Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, etc…). Ce qui l’occupe pour l’essentiel aujourd’hui est la défense en concert de la musique de ses deux albums récents parus chez ECM, dont le dernier, « Playground », a été enregistré en janvier 2007 à la tête d’un quintet international au son jazz très acoustique porté par les excellentes compositions du leader. « Des codes se sont établis dans nos modes de jeux collectifs. J’ai notamment beaucoup appris du talent des autres » ajoute le batteur, très proche des deux polonais de son groupe : Marcin Wasilewski (piano) et Slawomir Kurkiewicsz (contrebasse). Mention spéciale aussi aux deux norvégiens – le trompettiste Mathias Eick et le saxophoniste Trygve Seim – qui viennent de rejoindre l’aventure du batteur.
