Quel rapport entretenez-vous avec le piano ?
Marc-André Dalbavie : C’est par le piano que je suis venu à la musique. J’ai étudié cet instrument, mais pendant longtemps je n’ai rien écrit pour lui, hormis des parties pour piano au sein de l’orchestre symphonique. Il y a cinq ans, j’ai entendu Mitsuko Uchida jouer le Concerto de Schoenberg : ce fut un événement déclencheur. Je me suis alors décidé à écrire pour piano seul. Mais la pièce que j’ai composée n’a jamais été créée, devenant en fait une matrice qui a voyagé dans différents environnements : en musique de chambre (dans ma pièce Axiom, pour piano, clarinette, basson et trompette – une formation pour laquelle Debussy avait souhaité écrire ; et dans mon Trio pour piano, violon et cor) et en piano et orchestre.
Le point de départ de votre concerto, c’est la rencontre avec le pianiste Leif Ove Andsnes…
M.-A. D. : Je l’ai découvert dans Schumann. J’ai tout de suite été séduit par son jeu très chantant, d’une ampleur toute symphonique, jamais percussif. C’est ce que je recherchais comme sonorité de piano… Nous nous sommes rencontrés aux Etats-Unis, puis il m’a invité comme compositeur en résidence dans son festival en Norvège. Nous avons alors lancé l’idée d’un concerto ensemble. La création a eu lieu il y a quatre ans au Festival des Proms de Londres, puis nous l’avons joué dans différents endroits et nous venons de l’enregistrer pour EMI à Munich.
Comment se présente cette œuvre ?
M.-A. D. : J’explore dans cette partition l’idée de polyphonie : je travaille sur la superposition de plusieurs musiques, sur des processus continus. C’est une écriture par « mixage ». Les motifs des trois mouvements (Allegro-Adagio-Presto) sont présents dès le début. Par ailleurs, j’ai observé les différents modes d’interaction entre l’orchestre et le soliste présents dans les concertos romantiques. Les deux entités s’opposent, dialoguent ou encore se prolongent par des effets de résonance. Je me suis approprié ces effets.

M.-A. D. : J’ai effectivement déjà collaboré plusieurs fois avec cet orchestre. Lors de l’édition du Festival Présences en 2005, où j’étais compositeur d’honneur, l’Orchestre a créé ma pièce Sinfonietta, et a donné un concert de mes œuvres spatialisées dans les halles des Blancs-Manteaux. Ce fut une aventure incroyable, qui a d’ailleurs donné lieu à un disque (Naïve). Enfin, l’Orchestre a enregistré (pour EMI) mon Concerto pour flûte, interprété par Emmanuel Pahud. C’est une formation que j’apprécie beaucoup, où j’ai d’ailleurs de nombreux amis que je connais depuis le Conservatoire !
Dans le concert de la Salle Pleyel, votre œuvre côtoie des extraits de Pelléas et Mélisande de Debussy, ainsi que la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz. Vous sentez-vous appartenir à une école française de composition ?
M.-A. D. : Beaucoup de musiciens étrangers me font remarquer que je développe dans mes œuvres une sonorité typiquement française. Mais je n’en ai pas forcément l’impression : c’est comme un poisson qui ne se rend pas compte qu’il est dans l’eau… J’ai effectivement été élevé au piano avec Debussy et Ravel. De plus, je pense que le rapport à notre langue maternelle se retrouve dans la manière de composer. Aujourd’hui, je ne me rattache à aucun courant : je ne suis ni dans l’orthodoxie moderne, ni dans le retour à l’orchestre du XIXème siècle. Je suis ailleurs…
