Dans une programmation comme à l’accoutumée dense et variée, où nouvelles têtes et artistes confirmés se côtoient, le Sunside accueille ce mois-ci deux remarquables pianistes contemporains. Tout d’abord, le 10 mai, l’Américain Marc Copland, 70 ans : en solo, ce dernier viendra jouer le répertoire du grand contrebassiste Gary Peacock, dont il a été un proche (ils ont abondamment enregistré en duo, en trio avec Joey Baron, et d’autres configurations encore), à l’occasion de la sortie sur le label Illusions d’un album sobrement intitulé « Gary ». Une musique introspective, sensible, aux qualités impressionnistes, par laquelle on se laisse emporter. Ensuite, c’est son confrère Yonathan Avishai, 42 ans, qui, deux soirs durant, les 23 et 24 mai, occupera en trio la scène du club, célébrant la sortie du troisième album (le premier pour le prestigieux label ECM) de son projet « Modern Times ». Il y présentera son art funambule et ludique, entre Duke Ellington et Charlie Chaplin, fait de thèmes aux allures d’historiettes et de reprises personnelles de thèmes classiques du jazz, avec toujours la joie du swing en ligne de mire.
