On ne présente plus le violoncelliste Marc Coppey, strasbourgeois de naissance, spécialiste de Bach, personnalité essnetielle de la riche scène française de son instrument. L’ex-membre (pendant 5 ans) du Quatuor Ysaye a aujourd’hui, on le sait, repris son entière liberté de soliste et de chambriste… Dans son aventure Brahms du moment, il remonte à la source de sa vocation personnelle : c’est en effet en écoutant le Premier Sextuor de Brahms, en concert, à l’âge de 4 ans, qu’il confie avoir définitivement décidé de devenir musicien et violoncelliste… Brahms a composé deux sonates pour violoncelle et piano, à plus de 20 ans d’écart, en 1862 pour la Sonate en mi mineur (opus 38) puis en 1886 pour la Sonate en fa majeur (opus 99). Il a aussi probablement signé de sa main la transcription pour violoncelle de sa Sonate pour violon et piano en ré majeur (opus 78). Les trois œuvres constituent une intégrale de l’œuvre pour violoncelle et piano du compositeur et figurent au programme de ses deux prochains concerts franciliens, avec son jeune complice russe Peter Laul. Un enregistrement est aussi en préparation. Pour Coppey, ce nouveau projet est éclairé par une découverte récente, qu’il vient de faire sur le site de la Violoncello Society, selon laquelle Brahms (que l’on savait pianiste) jouait aussi du violoncelle… « Une découverte qui donne un sens et une explication supplémentaires au rôle privilégié que Brahms donne au violoncelle, dans toute sa musique, à l’instar du cor qu’il a aussi pratiqué, explique Coppey. Il y a notamment un rapport très savant mais aussi très sensuel à l’instrument dans son écriture qui doit être lié aux sensations d’interprète… ».
