Pour le metteur en scène Marc Guepratte qui la met en scène, Un avenir de roi de Claude Bourgeyx est un « thriller lent ». Autrement dit, c’est une pièce où tout ce qui arrive dans les livres ou dans les films à suspense arrive en effet, mais avec un retard tel qu’ils sont davantage comiques et étranges que bouleversants. Incarné par Philippe Huriet, un certain Albert, dont la consommation régulière de Porto fait remonter les souvenirs à la surface, est le héros de cette histoire. Absolument seul dans la vie, ce protagoniste se livre à une singulière confession qui révèle chez lui un secret : un désir de jeunesse contrarié par son entourage, qui des années plus tard s’avère enfin réalisable. Récit d’une lente libération, d’une mue qui prend son temps, Un avenir de roi dit avec humour combien, selon les mots d’André Malraux cités par l’auteur, « l’homme est ce qu’il cache, un misérable petit tas de secrets ».
