Née en 1946, Maria Bethânia fait ses premiers pas sur scène en 1965, comme son frère cadet le géant Caetano Veloso. Sa carrière connaît un premier sommet en 1976 avec l’album « Alibi » vendu à plus d’un million d’exemplaires, scellant sa complicité artistique avec les meilleures plumes brésiliennes dont Chico Buarque. De la figure contestataire des années 60, véritable icône de la contre-culture mondiale, reste surtout aujourd’hui une exceptionnelle interprète. Musicienne éclairée, vocaliste aux inflexions subtiles, Maria Bethânia possède un sens de l’interprétation et de l’émotion irrésistibles qui culmine dans l’art de la ballade sentimentale. Discrète, modeste et souvent trop lointaine (mais pas ce soir !), elle est l’égale de Piaf, Billie Holiday ou Amalia Rodrigues, dans d’autres continents musicaux. Maria Bethânia sera évidemment entourée pour cette soirée exceptionnelle à Pleyel de la crème des musiciens brésiliens, placés sous la direction de Jayme Alem : Joao Carlos Coutinho (piano, accordéon), Rômulo Gomes (contrebasse), Carlos Balla (batterie), Reginaldo Vargas (percussion), Marcio Mallard (violoncelle), Israel Vargas (guitare).
