THÉÂTRE DES CHAMPS-ÉLYSÉES / OPÉRA VERSION DE CONCERT
L’histoire de la Renaissance anglaise n’a cessé de fasciner Donizetti. Après Anna Bolena, son premier grand succès (1830), suivront Maria Stuarda (1835) puis Roberto Devereux (1837). C’est le deuxième opus de la « Trilogie Tudor » qui s’incarne au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées sous la baguette de Speranza Scappucci à la tête de l’Orchestre de chambre de Paris. Joyce DiDonato interprète cette femme à la fois fragile et fière : Maria Stuarda. La reine d’Écosse, catholique, affronte le destin cruel infligé par l’anglicane Elisabeth, chantée par Carmen Giannattasio. Rivalités politiques, guerre psychologique, mais aussi passion pour le même homme, Robert Dudley, pimentent cet ouvrage inspiré par une pièce de Schiller. Qu’importe que la rencontre entre Elisabeth Ire et Marie Stuart n’ait jamais eu lieu, ni que Leicester n’ait jamais songé à sauver Marie de la passion meurtrière de la reine. Plus que la vérité historique, l’important réside dans la musique. D’un lyrisme tragique et expressif, elle fait de cet opéra une des perles du bel canto.
