Les rapports entre la réalité et l’illusion constituent-ils, selon vous, les enjeux centraux du Plaisir d’être honnête ?
Marie-José Malis : Non. Ma thèse est que le théâtre de Pirandello, comme celui de Brecht d’ailleurs, sont liés à une hypothèse découverte par la modernité : celle qui consiste à dire que l’humanité est une construction, un projet. Si l’humanité est construction de l’homme par l’homme, plusieurs conséquences peuvent être tirées : d’abord il n’y a pas de réalité authentique. On n’échappe alors pas à cette dimension artificielle, l’homme est toujours un masque. Ensuite la fiction prend une valeur positive. Nous devons nous orienter par elle, rêver notre devenir, inventer des scénarios consistants qui feront de notre monde l’organisation la plus belle et la plus juste possible.

Quelle lecture faite-vous du théâtre de Pirandello ?
M.-J. M. : Je place Pirandello du côté de l’invention radicale et de l’héroïsme moderne. Pour moi, il est un aventurier de l’esprit et un dramaturge révolutionnaire. Les années 1910-1920 ont vraiment mis l’humanité à nu. Pirandello fait de cet homme nouveau le sujet de son théâtre. Il établit des hypothèses, essaie de comprendre la portée de cette humanité livrée au vide et à sa propre décision. C’est cela qui me passionne. Comment Pirandello, parce qu’il avait une intuition sur l’homme, a besoin du théâtre pour la comprendre. Comment il invente un théâtre de la pensée, un théâtre des hypothèses et de leur arithmétique, avec cet humour des conséquences si admirable. Cela, je l’appelle un théâtre du possible. Au lieu de se lamenter, on vient vérifier, organiser le chemin d’une question qui peut sauver, pointer les vertus qu’elle nécessite et qui sont celles d’une époque. Ma question à moi est d’essayer de rendre cette invention de vie, ce rapport au possible (gagné de très haute lutte contre la confusion) absolument vivaces au public.
Quelle vision de la mise en scène et du théâtre défendez-vous à la tête de la compagnie Llevantina ?
M.-J. M. : Je pense en termes de médium et de discipline. L’interdisciplinarité ne m’intéresse que pour penser mon medium : le théâtre. Avec les acteurs, les techniciens de la Llevantina, nous faisons un théâtre réflexif. Son enjeu est de rendre sensible le destin de cet art aujourd’hui, ses ressources, son extrême rareté, son éclaircie aussi rare que la politique véritable. Nous ne devons pas être paresseux, ni trop facilement renégats. Le théâtre ne doit pas être abandonné à ceux qui le pratiquent avec académisme. Il est le laboratoire de notre rapport au possible, de notre rapport pensable et non seulement "expérimenté" dans l’œuvre. C’est toute sa difficulté et sa grandeur.
