Aujourd’hui, vous mettez en scène George Dandin pour la cinquième fois. Qu’est-ce qui vous lie à cette pièce ?
Mario Gonzalez : Pour moi, il s’agit tout simplement de la plus belle pièce de Molière. Je l’ai créée deux fois en Allemagne, une fois en Suède, une fois au Danemark. Et plus je la monte, plus je me dis que c’est une pièce fabuleuse, un véritable chef-d’œuvre. Cela faisait plus de dix ans que je voulais la mettre en scène en français, mais mes comédiens n’étaient pas libres.
Pour vous, George Dandin n’est pas une farce…
M. G. : Non, je pense que c’est une tragédie. Et comme toute bonne tragédie, elle est traversée par quelques moments comiques, pour justement mettre en valeur ses aspects dramatiques. Mais, fondamentalement, il s’agit d’une pièce noire, où la mort finit par apparaître, ce qui est quasiment unique chez Molière. Pour être fidèle à ce qui me semble être l’esprit de la pièce, j’ai donc choisi de la traiter en conservant le comique, mais en faisant en sorte qu’il y ait le moins de scènes de farce possible.
Pourquoi avez-vous voulu présenter George Dandin comme un homme jeune et beau ?
M. G. : Car il est beaucoup trop facile qu’une jeune et jolie femme n’aime pas un vieux ! Même si ce vieux est riche.

Il me semble plus fort de montrer les véritables raisons pour lesquelles Angélique ne tombe pas amoureuse de lui : parce qu’il a abusé d’un droit, parce qu’il a voulu l’acheter, comme une marchandise. Mon parti pris cherche à faire comprendre qu’il ne suffit pas d’être jeune, beau et riche pour qu’une jeune femme accepte d’épouser un homme. Les enjeux de la pièce se situent à un autre endroit, du côté de la liberté et de l’indépendance de la femme. Il s’agit d’un propos révolutionnaire pour l’époque. Je pense, d’ailleurs, que c’est pour édulcorer sa pièce que Molière a fait appel à la farce. D’une certaine façon, j’ai donc l’impression de me rapprocher de ce qu’il aurait vraiment fait s’il avait été sûr de ne pas être censuré !
Votre décision d’utiliser les masques correspond donc à cette volonté de gommer la dimension générationnelle de la pièce…
M. G. : Oui. Le masque aide à lisser les âges de tous les personnages. Angélique, par exemple, qui est censée avoir 15 ans est interprétée par une comédienne de 30 ans. Et puis, le masque permet au comédien de jouer des choses qu’il n’aurait jamais jouées à visage découvert, d’aller beaucoup plus loin. Le masque est comme un traducteur : il dit ce que le visage ne peut pas dire. Il s’agit d’un art très spectaculaire, qui permet à la fois de décaler et d’approfondir certains aspects de jeu, certaines dimensions des personnages.
