Vous dirigez à la fois l’Orchestre Royal du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam et l’Orchestre de la Radio bavaroise. Quelles différences y a-t-il entre ces deux phalanges ?
Mariss Jansons : Ces deux orchestres ont des personnalités très différentes. L’Orchestre de la Radio Bavaroise est particulièrement spontané, avec beaucoup de tempérament et une très grande musicalité. Au Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, ce qui est marquant, c’est leur précision, leur finesse – un peu comme les Wiener Philharmoniker. Mais ils sont tous les deux très intelligents dans leur approche du texte musical.
Quel est votre répertoire de prédilection ?
M.J. : Il n’y a pas un compositeur que j’aime plus que les autres. Il est d’ailleurs très difficile de diriger une œuvre qui nous touche vraiment, dont on est amoureux. J’apprécie beaucoup Haydn, dont la musique me semble négligée. Les orchestres modernes n’osent plus la jouer du fait des ensembles sur instruments d’époque. Pour ma part, j’essaie de faire la synthèse entre la tradition et les nouvelles connaissances stylistiques.
Vous avez étudié à Salzbourg avec Herbert von Karajan. Quel souvenir gardez-vous de ce chef, dont on commémore cette année le centenaire de la naissance ?
M.J. : C’était une expérience incroyable. Je travaillais avec lui de 9h le matin à 23h. Etre aussi proche d’une telle personnalité, c’est une vraie école. J’ai absorbé tout ce qu’il avait à dire. Je retiens avant tout de lui la magie du son et son énorme énergie.
A la Salle Pleyel, vous allez diriger ce mois-ci la Première Symphonie de Schumann. On reproche souvent aux symphonies de ce compositeur d’être mal orchestrées. Qu’en pensez-vous ?
M.J. : Oui et non. Il y a des choses à régler, ces œuvres ne sont pas parfaites. Mais finalement, c’est le métier du chef que de régler le son de l’orchestre en fonction du répertoire. Ces œuvres ne sont pas aussi tragiques que beaucoup de musiciens en ont l’impression.
Au programme de votre concert parisien figurent également Les Tableaux d’une exposition de Moussorgski dans l’orchestration de Ravel. Quelle est votre vision de cette œuvre située à mi-chemin entre le répertoire russe et français ?
M.J. : C’est une œuvre très raffinée. Je pense que c’est pour cette raison que Ravel a souhaité l’orchestrer. On ne doit pas la jouer avec une sonorité traditionnelle russe, car la partition doit rester très transparente. Il est intéressant de voir les dessins réalisés par Victor Hartmann, qui ont inspiré Moussorgski. Chaque mouvement a un caractère précis et délicat.
Vous dirigez régulièrement à Paris. Comment jugez-vous les salles de concerts de cette ville ? Attendez-vous avec impatience la construction de la nouvelle Philharmonie à La Villette ?
M.J. : Je n’ai pas joué à la Salle Pleyel depuis longtemps. Je suis curieux de savoir comment cette salle sonne avec sa nouvelle acoustique. Sinon, je suis souvent venu avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Vienne au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. J’ai trouvé le public très chaleureux. Pour ce qui est de la Philharmonie, si cette salle a une bonne acoustique, ça peut être merveilleux. La salle, c’est l’instrument de l’orchestre. Si on donne à un pianiste un mauvais piano, il sera impossible pour lui d’en tirer quelque chose. C’est la même chose pour les orchestres avec les salles de concerts.
L’Orchestre du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, comme l’Orchestre Symphonique de Londres, développe son propre label de disques. Est-ce une solution à la crise que traverse l’industrie discographique ?
M.J. : C’est exactement cela. Le problème, c’est que les majors veulent aujourd’hui rapidement récupérer l’argent qu’elles ont investi. En faisant nos propres enregistrements, on est libre de choisir le répertoire et de rechercher la qualité que l’on souhaite. Il y a de moins en moins de ventes de disques, mais il est important de continuer d’enregistrer. Ce sont les documents de notre époque, à transmettre aux générations futures.
