Agathe Alexis pour L’Épreuve et Robert Bouvier pour Les Acteurs de bonne foi se sont fait un malin plaisir à explorer la Carte du Tendre de la vie amoureuse. Par-delà l’allégorie des Précieuses, le théâtre de Marivaux passe à la pratique rude de travaux dirigés dans le domaine affectif des émotions, des sentiments et des passions. Cet espace intime, vif et mouvementé, est vécu par de jeunes gens et de moins jeunes de toute condition. Dans L’Épreuve, Angélique, la fille de la gouvernante du château, aime Lucidor, l’héritier. Celui-ci le lui rend bien, mais pour s’assurer que la demoiselle l’aime pour lui et non pour son argent, le maître recourt à des ruses et à des subterfuges. Il déguise Frontin, un valet coquin, en riche personnage prétendant à Angélique ; il implique le fermier Maître Blaise dans un même stratagème. Heureusement, la suivante Lisette y va de son bagou et s’approprie l’un des marauds. La comédienne Marie Delmarès joue à fond sa condition inférieure – sociale et sexuelle –de jeune fille blessée par l’indifférence du maître. Amoureuse, admirative et respectueuse de Lucidor (cruel Robert Bouvier), elle est traversée par des émotions douloureuses, la jalousie et l’humiliation, à travers des manifestations visibles, le rougissement, l’embarras, le tremblement, la colère ou la rage secrète.
S’amuser des inclinations contrariées
Cette sensibilité à fleur de peau est partagée par les autres acteurs, avec la pompe baroque de Frank Michaux (Frontin), l’espièglerie de Nathalie Jeannet (Lisette), le comique aigu de Guillaume Marquet (Blaise) ; Maria Verdi en mégère jouit d’une belle autorité. La même obligation due au pouvoir et à l’argent joue dans Les Acteurs de bonne foi où Éraste s’apprête à épouser Angélique, grâce à la dot de sa tante. Pour remercier cette dernière (Agathe Alexis souveraine), le maître fait appel à Merlin, son valet de chambre qui organise un divertissement. Le manipulateur emmêle les sentiments des acteurs d’extraction populaire, Blaise et Colette, Lisette et lui-même, des couples qui doivent « s’échanger » sur la scène pour les besoins de l’intrigue. Révolte des acteurs manipulés et de la mère d’Angélique (brûlante Maria Verdi) qui n’a guère confiance dans le théâtre. La bienfaitrice, metteuse en scène de la représentation, s’amuse des inclinations contrariées. Tous les comédiens, depuis Colette (pétillante Sandrine Girard), infidèle à Blaise, jusqu’à Nathalie Sandoz, la jolie veuve marchant sur les brisées des jeunes filles, s’embrasent dans des émotions corporelles manifestes, passant de la honte à la timidité, de l’anxiété à la culpabilité, du rire aux larmes. L’émotion est admirable, jouée comme dans la vie à contrecoeur.
