« Le mouvement ne ment jamais. Le corps révèle ce que l’on veut cacher ». Cette phrase, filée sur la pensée d’un père médecin aliéniste, toujours accompagna le geste de Martha Graham (1894-1991). Rebelle aux couperets du puritanisme comme aux fers des traditions, celle qui fraya le chemin de la « modern dance » outre-Atlantique œuvra pour un art résolument en prise avec son temps et l’identité américaine. Sa technique, toute en lignes anguleuses, tracés rigoureux et déséquilibres, s’origine dans les entrailles et libère les maux secrets du désir. Mais l’élan des émotions intérieures s’aiguise au fil tranchant de la révolte contre l’aliénation de l’individu et des troubles des années d’après-guerre, quand la dépression frappait les Etats-Unis et la peste brune gangrénait l’Europe. La chorégraphe, qui fonda en 1926 son école et sa compagnie (exclusivement féminine jusqu’en 1938), grava dans sa danse les échos de la psychanalyse et des mythologies grecques, l’histoire des pionniers et des Indiens d’Amérique, tout comme le quotidien des hommes en temps de guerre ou de crise économique. Quitte à hérisser les conformismes de son époque.
Trois programmes à l’affiche
Après les retentissants démêlés financiers et judiciaires qui suivirent la disparition de la « grande prêtresse » au point d’interrompre les activités de la compagnie de 2000 à 2003, la troupe new-yorkaise a retrouvé les plateaux et fait escale pour quatre jours à Paris, dix ans après sa dernière visite en 1999. Piochant parmi les 181 ballets au répertoire, trois programmes offrent un beau parcours à travers l’œuvre, depuis les pièces engagées des années 30 (Chronicle), les chefs-d’œuvre de la période « grecque » sur les héroïnes de la mythologie, des ballets plus joyeux tels Diversion of Angels, et sa dernière production, Maple Leaf Rag, qui datede 1990. Parmi les neuf pièces présentées, figurent deux créations françaises : Lamentation variations, autour du célèbre solo, et Clytemnestra, fresque tragique créée en 1958 et remise en scène aujourd’hui.
