Plus d’un demi-siècle après ses premiers pas discographiques, en 1953, Martial Solal, né à Alger en 1927, installé à Paris en 1950, est honoré par un grand concert de prestige au Théâtre du Châtelet. Depuis cinq décennies, traversant tous les courants et les modes, il ne cesse d’apparaître comme un ovni de son instrument, puisant dans l’ivresse pianistique d’une virtuosité rare le terreau d’une imagination musicale prodigieuse. Plus que jamais, Solal reste un musicien de la surprise, de la volte-face, de l’humour, un maître du swing surtout, facétieux et mystérieux, démonstratif et pudique, ouvert à la rencontre. Il le prouve une fois de plus lors de cette soirée en multipliant les dialogues en duos – avec le guitariste Bireli Lagrene, avec le trompettiste Eric Le Lann, avec sa fille chanteuse Claudia Solal ou encore à deux pianos avec Stefano Bollani -, avant de donner naissance, en deuxième partie, à un trio inédit composé du contrebassiste danois Mads Vinding et du légendaire Roy Haynes à la batterie.
