« Comme un beau pré dépouillé de ses fleurs. Comme un tableau privé de ses couleurs, Comme le ciel, s’il perdait ses étoiles, (…) Et un anneau, sa perle précieuse: Ainsi perdra la France soucieuse Ses ornements, en perdant sa beauté Qui fut sa fleur, sa couleur, sa clarté. ». C’est en ces vers fleuris de larmes que Ronsard regrettait le départ de Mary Stuart, en 1561, vers l’Ecosse, sa patrie de naissance. Souveraine déchue, dont la beauté exaltée par l’intelligence enflamma poètes, peintres et courtisans, elle griffa au cœur de l’histoire son terrible destin, marqué aux fers de la félicité puis du malheur. Née en terres celtiques, mais élevée au sein des Valois à l’époque de la Renaissance flamboyante, éphémère épouse de François II, elle regagna son pays pour y retrouver un trône avant que de le fuir au grondement révolté des Lords et de quêter asile chez sa cousine, Elisabeth 1ère… qui la fit emprisonner durant vingt ans et décapiter en 1587. Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) s’empare de cette vie de légende, rehaussée de complots, de réclusions et de trahisons, qu’il brode sur la trame d’une tragédie romantique tout en clairs-obscurs pour révéler les sombres luttes du pouvoir, la dualité des hommes, et l’irrémédiable solitude de la couronne.
Guerre des reines
Sur fond de guerre entre catholiques et protestants, le poète allemand confronte Mary et Elisabeth, deux femmes que tout oppose et pourtant inextricablement liées. Deux héritières du trône, l’une par le sang, l’autre par testament. L’une, belle captive, orgueilleuse humiliée, malhabile tacticienne, s’avance vers la mort. L’autre, reine menacée de despotisme, soumise aux servitudes de la politique et de l’opinion publique, verrouille les failles de sa puissance. Loin de tailler ses personnages en monolithe, Schiller au contraire cisèle des contradictions diaboliques au creux des âmes, taille les chairs aux ciseaux du désir et de la raison d’Etat, de l’être et du paraître. L’adaptation scénique, signée Eberhard Spreng et Stuart Seide, débarbouille la langue de tout lyrisme toc et resserre l’intrigue sur le duel, tendu jusqu’à la dialectique. Il fallait une troupe à l’unisson et des comédiennes de haute tension pour jouer cette partition complexe. Et notamment Océane Mozas qui donne à Mary Stuart une grâce tour à tour tempétueuse dans la révolte et lumineuse sur le chemin de la plénitude spirituelle. La mise en scène de Stuart Seide, conforme à son esthétique habituelle, mène le jeu efficacement dans la sobre et juste scénographie de Philippe Marioge. Rarement la tragédie de Mary n’aura été portée avec autant d’intensité.
