Le Songe d’une nuit d’été en 2006, Hamlet en 2008, Othello en 2010 : depuis plusieurs années, Thomas Ostermeier se confronte régulièrement à l’œuvre de William Shakespeare. Aujourd’hui, le metteur en scène allemand crée Maß für Maß (Mesure pour mesure), comédie troublante et scabreuse qui interroge les thèmes du lien social, de la vertu, de la justice. Ainsi, quand au nom du principe de légalité un honnête homme se voit condamné à mort alors qu’une canaille est acquittée, ce sont les notions mêmes d’ordre et de justice qui sont remises en cause. « Les comportements que le dramaturge anglais met à l’épreuve sous nos yeux, explique le conseiller artistique de l’Odéon, Daniel Loayza, n’intéressent pas que l’individu ; d’entrée de jeu, les questions posées importent à toute la cité. » Des questions à travers lesquelles Thomas Ostermeier élabore une représentation « portée par les élans du cœur et de la chair ».
