« Masculines est une interrogation liée aux interdits, à l’émancipation des femmes, au-delà de l’orient et des problématiques liées au monde arabo-musulman. Masculines part des tableaux du peintre Ingres car nous avons commencé à regarder, à travers l’orientalisme, comment les femmes ont été vues dans l’histoire de l’art. Le projet a vraiment démarré avec Le Bain Turc, dans un travail sur les clichés. Et le plus fort d’entre eux est relié au fait que les femmes sont maintenues, encore aujourd’hui quand on parle d’érotisme, dans une horizontalité : ce sont des corps qui attendent, alanguis, dans une volupté, une langueur. On a voulu s’attacher à ces postures du féminin encore à l’œuvre, mais dans une entreprise de « dézingage ». Des femmes très différentes sont rassemblées : une Estonienne, une Suédoise bosniaque, une Japonaise, des Européennes… L’enjeu pour ces interprètes est de jouer sans cesse avec les images qu’elles endossent pour faire apparaître des singularités. Et ces danseuses expriment des choses d’elles en tant que femmes d’aujourd’hui, en tant que danseuses qui ont fait des choix de vie très forts. »
