Maître de l’électronique, attiré par les « autres musiques » (New wave, jazz, musique bruitiste, etc…), passionné par l’improvisation, le compositeur Wolfgang Mitterer est une personnalité « à part » dans le monde de la musique contemporaine. Il a conçu en 2003, sur le texte de la pièce Massacre à Paris de Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593), un opéra en 18 parties réunissant cinq chanteurs et neuf instrumentistes entourés d’une riche et vaste construction sonore électronique. L’ouvrage met en scène les rapports de force et les luttes pour le pouvoir qui opposent le duc et la duchesse de Guise, la reine Catherine de Médicis, Henri III et le roi de Navarre, cocktail de complots et trahisons précédant et suivant la nuit de la Saint-Barthélémy. Massacre vient d’être présenté au festival Musica à Strasbourg dans cette nouvelle mise en scène de Ludovic Lagarde (de retour sur une scène parisienne après le Roméo et Juliette de Pascal Dusapin à l’Opéra Comique). Avec les voix de Elizabeth Calleo, Valérie Philippin, Nora Petrocenko, Jean-Paul Bonnevalle, Lionel Peintre, Stéfany Ganachaud et le Remix Ensemble, placés sous la direction de Peter Rundel.
Le même soir dans le même théâtre, en « After », Wolfgang Mitterer aux claviers électroniques improvisera en compagnie de Louis Sclavis (clarinette, sax soprano) et Herbert Pirker (batterie).
