La Seine devint rouge, dit-on, le lendemain de la nuit du 23 août 1572, du sang des protestants dont le fleuve charriait les cadavres au pied d’un Louvre abject où les derniers Valois expiaient leurs crimes politiques en voyant s’éteindre leur race maudite sous les coups du poison et de la folie. Temps déraisonnable que celui qui vit s’unir la Navarre à la couronne de France et le parti des Guise massacrer Coligny et les siens. « Qu’on les tue tous ! Qu’il n’en reste plus un pour qu’on puisse me le reprocher ! » : telles furent les paroles de Charles IX que répandit dans tout Paris le tocsin de Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois. Massacre à Paris, la dernière pièce écrite par Marlowe, l’Elisabéthain scandaleux, retrace, de façon libre et lapidaire, les heures terribles de la Saint-Barthélemy et met en scène les monstres qui s’y firent bouchers. Sans s’embarrasser des contraintes historiques et dynamitant les codes théâtraux établis, Marlowe joue de l’ellipse et de la crase, de l’accélération et de la condensation pour composer une fresque brutale et bouillonnante.
Tragique et comique mêlés au sein d’une Histoire ignominieuse
Guillaume Delaveau et sa troupe de douze comédiens s’emparent de cette « tragédie politique » qui sait se draper dans la comédie, où « les situations vont à l’essentiel, certains traits sont grossis, les scènes sont parfois burlesques, les assassins deviennent souvent des clowns ». De meurtre en meurtre, le théâtre en vient à tutoyer la mort et amène le spectateur à mesurer « les dégâts du fanatisme religieux », quand le pouvoir s’autorise l’audace insupportable de parler et d’agir au nom de Dieu. Le texte de Marlowe bat au rythme des cœurs qu’accélèrent le désir du pouvoir, la soif de vengeance et l’ivresse cannibale et offre aux comédiens la possibilité, avec plus de trente personnages, de mourir et de renaître sur scène, de passer du tragique à la farce en un théâtre « comme une bête à deux têtes voraces », et de déployer leurs talents en un spectacle au souffle inattendu, trépidant et incroyablement vivace.
