Wolfgang Mitterer (né en 1958), est une figure atypique dans le monde de la musique contemporaine. Organiste, il est un interprète renommé de Bach tout autant que de Ligeti ou de ses propres œuvres. Mais il s’installe aussi volontiers derrière d’autres claviers : au festival Musica (Strasbourg) en 2008, il était aux côtés du multi-instrumentiste (clarinette, saxophone) Louis Sclavis pour un jazz largement teinté d’électronique. Très tôt, il découvre les possibilités sonores de l’électroacoustique, qui est devenue un fondement essentiel de son langage musical. Dans Massacre, l’électronique est un élément fort, musical et narratif. L’argument, brutal, se prête bien, il est vrai, à un traitement parfois bruitiste.
Un opéra de la violence
Quand Christopher Marlowe écrit Massacre à Paris, vraisemblablement en 1593, l’émotion produite par le massacre de la Saint-Barthélémy, une vingtaine d’années plus tôt, demeure extrêmement sensible. La violence de l’événement, la part de trahison qu’il porte jusque dans la famille royale, fournissent au théâtre élisabéthain un sujet à son goût. Wolfgang Mitterer, qui a co-écrit le livret avec Stephan Müller, s’inscrit pleinement dans la filiation de ce théâtre qui n’hésite pas à représenter la violence, pour marquer les esprits et dénoncer son temps. Écrit en 2003, l’opéra pointe avec évidence, au-delà d’un moment historique distant de plus de quatre siècles, d’autres violences, celles-ci contemporaines, pour lesquels la justification philosophique et civilisationnelle est toujours de mise.
