Etiez-vous déjà partie, pour l’une de vos créations, d’une pièce marquante du répertoire chorégraphique ?
Mathilde Monnier : Non, c’est la première fois ! Et en fait de pièce marquante, il s’agit vraiment d’un monument de l’histoire de la danse. Tout le monde a en tête quelques images liées à La Mort du Cygne, cette danse étonnante où l’interprète improvise, dans un cadre totalement abstrait. Mais ce ballet n’est pas bien connu pour autant : il est rarement présenté dans les théâtres (on ne programme pas de pièces de trois minutes !), on le confond avec Le Lac des Cygnes ou même avec les Willis de Giselle… C’est généralement par le biais de films que l’on entre en contact avec La Mort du Cygne, par des images anciennes qui ajoutent au mythe et contribuent à faire du « cygne mourant » quelque chose de spectral.
Comment avez-vous travaillé à partir de ce « spectre » ?
M. M. : J’ai demandé à chaque danseur une réinterprétation de La Mort du Cygne. Certaines réinterprétations sont très directes, d’autres le sont moins ; mais dans l’ensemble, cette référence nous a emmenés vers une pièce très « dansée ». La musique également est faite de traces de ce ballet : j’ai demandé à plusieurs compositeurs d’écrire une évocation de la musique de Saint-Saëns que Fokine avait utilisée. Mais d’une manière générale, j’ai surtout repris l’idée d’une pièce qui pose la question de la fin, qui ose représenter la fin. C’est ce qui m’a amenée à travailler sur les « vanités », ces représentations d’objets qui renvoient à la futilité et la précarité de la vie humaine.
La danse peut-elle se faire l’écho du thème pictural des vanités ?
M. M. : C’est la question que je me suis posée. Figurer quelque chose d’éphémère, en danse, c’est d’une certaine façon ce que nous faisons chaque jour, car notre métier repose sur la disparition permanente. Ce travail sur la vanité nous a conduits à un travail plastique important, avec des objets que les danseurs prennent en coulisses et apportent sur le plateau. Ils créent ainsi des images – mais il s’agit d’images aléatoires, car ils ne savent pas quels objets les autres danseurs vont apporter ; par conséquent ils ne maîtrisent pas le sens des « tableaux » ainsi composés. Et surtout, ces images ne se fixent jamais ; elles disparaissent immédiatement. Car c’est finalement à cela que m’a amenée le ballet de Fokine : à l’idée de la mort de la représentation. Dans La Mort du Cygne, la danseuse monte sur scène pour y mourir ! C’est le cas aussi pour les neuf interprètes de Pavlova 3’23’’ ; certains vont mourir pendant toute la pièce… Mais ils ne sont pas les seuls : il y aura aussi la mort des images, de la dramaturgie, du plateau, des rideaux ! Il s’agit de travailler, en quelque sorte, la disparition du théâtre.
