On connaît surtout de Mathis le peintre la symphonie qu’en a tirée le compositeur. Cet opéra monumental en sept tableaux, évocation de la vie et de l’art de Matthias Grünewald (auteur du célèbre retable d’Issenheim), mérite cependant d’être porté sur scène, même si ce n’est pas tant l’action qui importe, mais surtout le parcours d’un homme qui traversa le tumulte de son siècle (la Réforme et la « Guerre des paysans ») avant de se réfugier dans la solitude de l’art et de la foi. En contrepoint, l’Amphithéâtre Bastille accueille deux concerts consacrés à la musique de chambre du compositeur et altiste (Antoine Tamestit le 23 novembre, Quatuor Danel le 30) tandis qu’à la Cité de la musique, l’Ensemble intercontemporain rapproche Hindemith de ses contemporains et héritiers : Weill, Eisler et Heiner Goebbels (le 13).
