Trésor du lied romantique, les trois grands cycles composés par Schubert – La Belle Meunière, Le Voyage d’hiver, Le Chant du cygne – déploient toute une dramaturgie portée à la fois par les poèmes et la musique, par la voix et le piano. Ces trois cycles sont littéralement des voyages et ne sauraient être parcourus sans une complicité absolue du chanteur et de l’instrumentiste – que l’on retrouve dans les enregistrements de Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau avec Gerald Moore ou dans ceux, très différents, de Peter Pears et Benjamin Britten. La voix profonde de Matthias Goerne insuffle à ses interprétations une dimension tragique qui ne saurait mieux s’exprimer, chez Schubert, que dans ce Winterreise et ses visions hallucinées. Depuis de nombreuses années, Christoph Eschenbach apprécie particulièrement l’art du baryton, qu’il a régulièrement invité à l’Orchestre de Paris. Remarquable pianiste accompagnateur, comme l’avait rappelé le précédent récital (La Belle Meunière en novembre dernier), il partage avec Mathias Goerne le même goût du détail et du sens profond des poèmes de Wilhelm Müller.
