Disparu en 2012, Hans Werner Henze nous a laissé une œuvre profuse et quelque peu déroutante. Associé dans ses jeunes années à l’avant-garde turbulente qu’il rencontre à Darmstadt, il s’en éloigne rapidement, renonçant aux dogmes pour bâtir une œuvre personnelle qui ne dédaigne pas les formes apparemment traditionnelles – il composera notamment dix symphonies entre 1947 et 2000. Son Requiem, que dirige Matthias Pintscher, est une œuvre étrange : les différents chants de la messe des morts ne sont que prétexte à neuf mouvements purement instrumentaux et l’œuvre – pour piano, trompette et ensemble – tient du concerto grosso, une forme baroque que Henze affectionnait. Ce requiem sans parole que le compositeur, très engagé politiquement, écrivit dans le contexte de la Guerre du Golfe (1991) est d’une exceptionnelle force expressive. C’est tout simplement l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de la musique de la fin du 20e siècle.
