Ce disque apparaît dans la continuité des précédents…
Matthieu Boré : L’idée est en effet de faire quelque chose qui soit une suite sans pour autant être une redite. Il y a davantage de compositions personnelles et, je crois, une plus grande variété de couleurs et d’influences. Un peu de pop anglaise s’est glissée au milieu de tout ça ! Au niveau du son, en particulier, on est allé plus loin dans la modernité en s’inspirant de groupes que j’aime beaucoup comme par exemple Portishead… Mais dans le même temps, on reste dans la continuité, on ne cesse de jouer des standards des années 30 avec beaucoup de chansons qui me tenaient à cœur !

Comme construisez-vous votre répertoire ?
M. B. : Je fouine pour trouver de nouvelles chansons, surtout dans le répertoire américain des années 30 à 50 qui fourmille de trésors ! La production est vraiment énorme en quantité et en qualité. Je trouve cette démarche passionnante : aller à la recherche de partitions et de chansons dans les bibliothèques, les médiathèques, sur internet… La première étape est cette phase de recherche : j’écoute, lis, regarde et compare des partitions puis, dans un deuxième temps, vient le travail de réinterprétation et de modernisation. Ce n’est pas parce qu’on a trouvé une chanson fantastique que l’on va faire quelque chose de fantastique !
Comment vous sentez-vous avec cette image de crooner ?
M. B. : Je ne me reconnais ni dans l’image du crooner ni dans celle d’un musicien de jazz très confidentiel. Je pense que je suis entre les deux ! Ce qui m’intéresse c’est de faire une musique que j’estime de qualité mais également populaire et destinée au grand public. C’est la grande force et le vrai savoir-faire des américains et des anglais depuis des dizaines d’années, de Gershwin aux Beatles ! Je crois respecter l’esprit et la langue de ces chansons. En revanche, je pense qu’existe une vraie différence dans mon travail avec des chanteurs anglais, américains ou canadiens actuels qui abordent le même répertoire.
