Chaplin l’appelait « mon professeur ». Première star internationale du septième art, au début du vingtième siècle, auteur et interprète de centaines de films, créateur du personnage de Max, aussi élégant que maladroit, en frac, haut de forme et guêtres blanches, Max Linder a inspiré Stéphane Olivié Bisson par son éblouissant parcours d’artiste, mais aussi par sa fin tragique prolongée par l’oubli. Max Linder s’est suicidé un matin de Toussaint 1925, entraînant dans la mort sa jeune épouse et laissant derrière eux un bébé de seize mois. Honteuse, la famille de Max enterra alors les bobines de ses films, presque toutes perdues. L’auteur et metteur en scène vise à créer un théâtre poétique de la réparation face à l’énigme d’une vie, à un fantôme qui interroge. « C’est cette silhouette de Max, d’homme autant que de fantôme, qui s’épuise à démêler les fils de sa vie et de son geste qui m’a bouleversé d’abord, passionné ensuite, et enfin infiniment troublé » confie-t-il. Sociétaire de la Comédie-Française, Jérémy Lopez se glisse dans le costume de Max, seul devant un écran blanc. Il livre en une longue adresse à sa fille le récit fragmenté de sa vie depuis l’enfance.
