May B. est sans doute la pièce chorégraphique la plus jouée depuis sa création en 1981. Une pièce montée alors comme un OVNI dans le paysage chorégraphique contemporain alors encore balbutiant mais portant tous les germes de son avenir radieux. Mais May B. n’est pas à considérer comme une trace du passé, bien au contraire, et ses personnages courbés par le poids des âges n’ont pas pris une ride. Il faut les voir glisser, râler, éructer, tous dégingandés dans leur démarche chancelante, pour comprendre que l’humanité, vue à l’aune de Beckett, n’a pas d’âge. Extrêmement touchants, les personnages semblent sortis d’un Godot ou d’une Fin de partie, et l’atmosphère toute encrassée d’argile poussiéreuse rappelle les no man’s lands de l’écrivain. Mais l’univers de Maguy Marin reste en tout point singulier, porté par le conseil de Beckett lui-même, lui suggérant la plus grande liberté. Aujourd’hui, quelques nouveaux interprètes enfilent les costumes du quotidien de May B., assurant encore pour de belles émotions et une belle tournée la vie d’un chef-d’oeuvre.
