« Fatmeh et Leïla se meurt sont les deux premières parties d’une trilogie autour des rituels de deuil dans le monde arabe et plus particulièrement dans la tradition chiite. J’y questionne les relations entre le corps, la religion et la société. Fatmeh est construite autour de trois figures féminines – la diva égyptienne Oum Kalthoum, la fille du prophète Mahomet et ma propre mère. Pour Leïla se meurt, j’ai travaillé avec une pleureuse professionnelle et j’interroge sa relation intime avec la mort. Enfin, avec May he rise and smell the fragance, j’interroge les racines des lamentations dans les mythes mésopotamiens, leur esthétique, leur poésie, par rapport à notre société contemporaine où l’intense présence de la mort décompose une partie de la vie quotidienne. J’aborde la masculinité et sa présence dans les funérailles à travers le pouvoir qu’ont les femmes d’exprimer la tristesse. C’est un pouvoir que les hommes n’ont pas, pour de nombreuses raisons sociales, religieuses et politiques. Or, je pense qu’il y a une nécessité à pleurer, à extérioriser sa douleur, alors que les hommes ne le font pas dans les sociétés arabes. »
