D’abord baptisé Medeamaterial, l’ouvrage conçu sur le texte de Heiner Muller est créé en mars 1992 au Théâtre de la Monnaie à Bruxelles. Pièce majeure de Pascal Dusapin, cette Médée contemporaine, initialement destinée à partager l’affiche avec Didon et Enée de Purcell a depuis connu de nombreuses productions, dont celle de 2000 à Nanterre mise en scène par André Wilms. Dans cette relecture réalisée pour le Théâtre San Martin de Buenos Aires en 2005, Antoine Gindt choisit de l’isoler de l’œuvre de Purcell pour mieux en souligner la singularité et l’unicité. « Cette mise en scène affiche la dimension énigmatique et tragique du rôle, place la chanteuse devant le quatuor vocal, le chœur et l’orchestre, qui, ainsi, et conformément à la partition de Pascal Dusapin, entrent en résonance avec ce long monologue, souligne Antoine Gindt. Médée, apparemment seule en scène, déroule ses fragments de mémoire, inquiétante figure trahie puis vengeresse, stupéfiante voix de colorature perdue dans les aigus extrêmes de la musique ». Avec la soprano allemande Caroline Stein dans le rôle-titre, le chœur Mikrokosmos et, pour sa première incursion dans le domaine de l’opéra contemporain, l’orchestre Les Siècles de François-Xavier Roth qui assume la direction musicale du projet.
