Jason l’avait promis à Médée au moment du départ de Colchide : rien ne devait pouvoir les séparer que la mort. A la fois promesse et menace, la déclaration en forme de prédiction rattrape les amants maudits qui ont construit, en gerfauts d’épouvante, leur nid dans un charnier criminel. Médée est celle qui ensanglante la filiation : meurtrière de son frère dépecé, traîtresse dont les pouvoirs ont perdu son père et sa patrie, elle frappe en aval comme elle a frappé en amont et tue ses enfants pour mieux se venger de Jason après avoir assassiné sa rivale par la ruse d’une tunique empoisonnée. Car la descendante du Soleil est une « héroïne barbare », comme le remarque Farid Paya, et Jason a fait l’erreur de croire qu’en s’unissant à une fille de la lointaine et hostile Colchide, il pouvait échapper à ses lois implacables. La sorcière Médée n’a pas d’autre règle que l’attrait, d’autre maxime que l’amour et d’autres liens que ceux du sang. Faisant de la passion de Médée un rituel dansé et musical, Farid Paya entend créer la « stupeur tragique » en faisant appel au talent de ses comédiennes et à « l’imaginaire du spectateur » en une fête de deuil populaire et collective.
