Odile Sankara, la tête couverte d’une crinière léonine, le corps tendu dans une violence qui est autant celle de l’amour malheureux que celle de la vengeance implacable, s’empare du texte de Max Rouquette et du personnage de Médée avec une évidence, une force et une intelligence du jeu qui laissent pantois. Humiliée par un époux qui lui préfère la pâle Créüse et choisit la compromission politique d’un second mariage en la laissant croupir aux marges de sa gloire nouvelle, Médée, fille de l’archaïsme et de la magie, devient, incarnée par la sœur cadette de Thomas Sankara, héros du peuple et espoir assassiné de l’Afrique, la porte-parole vibrante de tous ceux que la corruption et la compromission des dirigeants africains appauvrissent et affligent. Le talent de la comédienne, bien davantage évidemment que le souvenir vertueux de son frère, offre à son personnage cette dimension politique et cette fierté qui en font une reine choisissant de tuer ses enfants plutôt que de les voir réduits en esclavage au pied du trône de Créon. Le choix de Jean-Louis Martinelli et Gilles Taschet d’une scénographie qui emprunte ses éléments aux camps de transit et aux espaces de relégation qui défigurent et déshonorent le monde moderne va dans le sens d’une lecture politique de la tragédie qui, dans sa sobriété, est d’une terrifiante efficacité.
Un spectacle économe, intelligent et puissant
Force est de constater que le temps et les impératifs économiques, qui ont entraîné la destruction des décors de la première mouture de ce spectacle, ont forcé Martinelli à resserrer ses effets et lui ont donné l’idée de monter la reprise de cette pièce dans l’atelier de construction des décors du Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers, ont permis de créer une épure dont l’esthétique sied formidablement au texte de Max Rouquette. La puissance évocatrice de celui-ci est renforcée par le décor qui lui sert de cadre comme un contrepoids et une chambre d’échos intensificatrice de son lyrisme. A la rage incandescente et aux imprécations solaires de Médée qui répand le feu de son ancêtre divin sur ses ennemis, répondent les chants composés par Ray Lema sur les paroles traduites par Habib Dembele et Odile Sankara en bambara. De psaume en psaume, le chœur des chanteuses accompagne la marche implacable de la nécessité criminelle et entérine l’évidence de « la dimension tragique de l’Afrique » qui est à l’origine de cette mise en scène du texte de Max Rouquette. Autour d’Odile Sankara, les comédiens (dont le très émouvant Bakary Konate) compose une distribution harmonieuse. L’ensemble des talents ici réunis donne naissance à un spectacle remarquable de force et d’équilibre, aussi abouti en sa dramaturgie que pertinent en son ouverture réflexive.
