Si le metteur en scène Laurent Fréchuret s’empare de la tragédie d’Euripide aujourd’hui, c’est d’abord pour formaliser et créer sur le vaste plateau de la scène de Sartrouville un théâtre de voix, de corps et de musique qui renoue avec l’identité rituelle, musicale, populaire et sacrée de la tragédie athénienne. Il s’agit de considérer le texte non pas comme un simple objet littéraire mais comme une machine à jouer, car les tragédies athéniennes étaient « des opéras étranges », dont seul le texte a été conservé, alors que le jeu, le chœur et la musique, comme le contexte social et religieux, ont été perdus. Ainsi le metteur en scène a convaincu Florence Dupont, remarquable traductrice des tragédies de Sénèque et dénonciatrice d’un aristotélisme qui oublie la musique et le visuel au théâtre, d’écrire une nouvelle traduction. Et il a confié le rôle-titre à Catherine Germain, dont la présence vibrante permet selon lui « une relation avec le public d’une rare et intense proximité ». Une troupe de neuf comédiens et musiciens donnent vie à cette terrifiante histoire, où Médée la magicienne de Colchide, bannie et trahie par son mari Jason pour qui elle a abandonnée son pays et ses proches, pour qui elle a tuée son propre frère, imagine une monstrueuse vengeance alors même qu’elle est anéantie. Selon le metteur en scène, ce qui est à l’œuvre, c’est « l’invention et la construction d’une “déesse de la race des femmes“. (…) Médée mue et cette métamorphose m’évoque les toiles de Francis Bacon qui parlent de l’humain de manière crue et terrible, à travers une mise à nu et à vif. » Une transformation à théâtraliser…
