OPERA DE VERSAILLES / NOUVELLE PRODUCTION
Charpentier dut attendre d’atteindre 50 ans avant de pouvoir composer sa première tragédie lyrique, à cause du monopole de Lully sur l’opéra. Son Médée est pourtant un sommet du baroque, une musique somptueuse sur un livret de Thomas Corneille. La partition est défendue par David Fallis à la tête du TafleMusik orchestra et le metteur en scène Marshall Pynkoski, directeur de l’Opéra Atelier de Toronto. Un répertoire qu’il connaît bien puisqu’il a déjà présenté à Versailles Persée et Armide de Lully. Les deux artistes présentent une version « historique » de Médée qui s’inspire de l’esthétique et des idéaux du Grand Siècle. Non pour une conception muséale de l’œuvre mais au contraire pour en rechercher la résonnance aujourd’hui. Pour eux, « Médée est l’emblème même des réfugiés, une étrangère dont les coutumes et la religion engendrent crainte et méfiance. Lorsqu’elle perd son soutien, elle se retrouve incapable de survivre dans un pays qui la considère comme une ennemie étrangère. »
