Le mythe littéraire de Médée tient à son caractère monstrueux, une figure de l’Antiquité dont s’est brillamment emparé Euripide (431 avant J-C), à côté d’autres tragiques. Descendante du Soleil et criminelle passionnelle, la magicienne Médée recèle l’image du chaos et des forces maléfiques. Au-delà de souvenirs confus de rites initiatiques, Médée demeure l’exécutrice de l’acte le plus barbare jamais imaginé, l’infanticide. Elle exprime non seulement le tourment intérieur qui brûle l’être mais le déchirement qui accable l’âme, partagée entre la pitié pour ses fils et une soif de vengeance farouche. Entre cris et gémissements, celle qui est à la fois victime et bourreau pose sa détermination à tuer dans une volonté d’immortaliser un geste et de rendre emblématique une posture de révolte face à la trahison et à la perfidie d’un époux, Jason, vainqueur par ses soins de la fameuse Toison d’or. À présent, la femme humiliée récrimine contre l’infidèle et contre Créon, roi qui l’exile de Corinthe et père de la nouvelle épousée. Si les princes ne gouvernent que pour faire peur, dit le coryphée, c’est parce qu’ils ont peur. L’aspect féministe rend la pièce d’Euripide de grande actualité. Comme Médée qui a fui son père et sa patrie, toute femme qui se plie aux lois du mariage devient une « étrangère » dans sa nouvelle famille.

Le mari, dévolu au combat, est possesseur de sa femme ancrée dans l’étroitesse du foyer et ignorante des lois relationnelles adultes, cachées à elle durant son enfance. Surprise, la femme ne peut deviner l’identité de son compagnon. Médée a suivi le Grec, Jason, banni et réfugié en Corinthe, qui en s’alliant aujourd’hui à la famille royale prétend protéger les siens. Seule, en exil, enlevée à son pays comme un rapt, la mère est abandonnée, répudiée avec ses enfants : « Je sais bien qu’un émigré doit se fondre au pays qui l’accueille. Mon mari, ô sacrilège, se révèle le pire des hommes. » Médée se fait désormais l’ouvrière de la vengeance – toucher Jason en tuant sa descendance -, et elle est sauvée par le roi d’Athènes Égée et sa terre d’accueil. La mise en scène classique de Farid Paya décline avec tact les ombres et les lumières, les souffles et les silences de la respiration tragique, sans outrances. Chants du coryphée, chœur masqué et dansant, voûte et voiles, la dimension sacrée s’allie à la présence intense des acteurs dont l’allure orientale rappelle les samouraïs : Anne de Broca, Antonia Bosco, Patrice Gallet, Xavier-Valéry Gauthier, Anne-Laure Poulain, David Weiss. Un rappel de la tragédie antique à ses origines.
