« The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. » : le virelangue imposé en boucle par le sadique pygmalion Higgins à la délicieuse Eliza, afin de la débarrasser de son accent cockney et de ses manières frustres et brutales, a été immortalisé à l’écran par la sublime Audrey Hepburn. Inventée par George Bernard Shaw, adepte d’un socialisme éclairé qui n’ignorait rien des rapports entre lutte des classes et maîtrise des codes et du vocabulaire, la « fair lady » retrouve avec Marthaler, chantre des hommes de peu et des gestes de rien, une profondeur et une gravité un peu édulcorées par le technicolor hollywoodien ! Artiste associé de l’édition 2010 du festival, Christoph Marthaler a déjà présenté plusieurs de ses spectacles à Avignon. Il y revient cette année avec un « laboratoire de langues » farfelu, émouvant et tendre, placé sous la responsabilité du professeur Zoltan Karpathy, héritier décalé du brillant philologue inventé par Shaw.
Voyage dans les langues et les langages
Les comédiens et chanteurs investissent l’espace dessiné par Anna Viebrock, fidèle scénographe des spectacles de Marthaler. Pour cet opus, elle a imaginé, entre orgue et piano, des petits box individuels hyperréalistes où disséquer la langue et le langage, sous le regard de la reine d’Angleterre ! La Flûte enchantée, Douce nuit, Sainte nuit, les Scènes d’enfants de Schumann, Last Christmas, de Wham ! et autres tubes de la comédie musicale originale : seuls ou en chœur, les interprètes composent un jubilatoire moment de folie musicale. Exercices de diction, numéros répétés pour que la culture devienne une seconde nature, maîtrise du corps et de la voix pour corseter les affects et discipliner les attachements : ce que le linguiste impose à la fleuriste offre un terrain de jeu idéal pour ce perfectionniste de Marthaler, dont les spectacles sont aussi bien réglés que les mœurs aristocratiques par l’exigeante étiquette !
