Disque après disque, Mélissa Laveaux se distingue par une volonté d’ancrer son répertoire autant dans des mélodies finement ciselées que dans des textes subtilement engagés. La native de Montréal, diplômée en Ethique et société à l’université d’Ottawa, a ainsi toujours su concilier ces deux cordes, comme entendu sur Radyo Siwèl, où la chanteuse chercheuse réinvestissait le patrimoine haïtien pour réenchanter notre quotidien. C’est encore le cas avec Mama Forgot Her Name Was Miracle, son nouvel album où elle remet en avant la verve militante des femmes « mal traitées » par l’histoire officielle (Audre Lorde, Harriet Tubman ou encore Helen Stephens), pour créer un répertoire original dont le vernis pop ne doit pas faire oublier les éclats délicatement abrasifs. Elle en donnera une lecture avec des amis, parmi lesquels la chanteuse November Ultra et l’étoile du voguing Noam Sinseau.
