« J’ai envie de partager avec les spectateurs le plaisir charnel de sa prose et la gourmandise de ses phrases assassines, en interprétant sur scène cet homme de lettres hors du commun », dit Jean-Paul Farré, qui a voulu porter à la scène ce « continent littéraire » que sont les Mémoires d’outre-tombe. Cet ouvrage, où Chateaubriand raconte son enfance, ses voyages et sa vie politique, est marqué par la mélancolie, l’obsession de la fuite du temps, l’amour d’une nature plus rassurante et plus stable que le cœur des hommes et l’impétuosité de leurs agissements. Mais si Chateaubriand a regardé et pensé l’histoire, il a aussi contribué à la faire, et ses fonctions politiques l’ont conduit de ministères en ambassades. Côtoyant les puissants, il en croque les travers et les ridicules avec esprit et férocité. « Quand Chateaubriand se mêle de montrer « l’envers » de l’histoire, les vrais visages se découvrent, y compris le sien. Nul n’est épargné. », dit Jean-Luc Tardieu.
