Fièrement planté debout, dos arqué, poitrine bombée et regard levé vers l’avenir radieux : c’est ainsi que se dressait le corps sous la Révolution culturelle chinoise. Lancée en 1966 pour éradiquer « les quatre vieilleries » – les idées, la culture, les habitudes et les coutumes -, la grande purge maoïste s’appliqua méthodiquement à détruire le passé comme les hommes qui le portaient, les intellectuels. Wen Hui avait alors cinq ans, et a grandi dans une société cadenassée par les interdits et les attitudes figées sur le modèle de l’idéologie triomphante. Formée à la tradition chinoise et à l’Académie de danse de Pékin puis aux Etats-Unis et en Europe, la chorégraphe a fondé, avec le réalisateur de films documentaires Wu Wenguang, The Living Dance Studio, un espace de création atypique. Sa danse, tout en métonymies et décalages poétiques, saisit la réalité du monde à même le corps. Dans le duo Memory, elle fouille les souvenirs d’enfance fondus dans la chair et met en scène les reliefs de sa mémoire, comme autrefois elle créait des spectacles avec son lit comme plateau et sa moustiquaire comme rideau : chansons, photos de famille, extraits de films et d’histoires intimes ici se mêlent pour libérer les ombres inconscientes du passé.
