Le messianisme évangélique et le culturellement correct, souvent teintés de condescendance paternaliste, affirment l’évidence d’une culture subventionnée, à laquelle on confie le rôle de rempart contre tous les errements politiques et moraux des foules béates que l’art humanise. Mais « pourquoi l’art et la culture devraient-ils être nécessairement subventionnés ? N’est-il pas plus naturel et finalement plus démocratique qu’ils soient gérés directement par l’économie de marché, c’est-à-dire par la loi naturelle de l’offre et de la demande ? » Ne vaudrait-il pas mieux, en ces temps de crise, offrir du pain plutôt que du théâtre au peuple affamé ? François Rollin, avec le mordant et l’humour qu’on lui connaît, joue les équilibristes sur le fil du second degré et rappelle, en l’interrogeant, l’adage vilarien selon lequel la culture est un service public comme le gaz, l’eau et l’électricité.
