La théâtralité des pièces de Brecht n’est plus à démontrer. Son théâtre engagé et dialectique, distancié et émouvant, politique et lyrique, conjugue à l’infini des qualités supposées contraires. En montant Mère Courage pour sa première création en tant que directeur du NEST, Jean Boillot délivre quelques signes forts. Le premier : celui d’un théâtre qui regarde autour de lui, dans une région qui porte plus que toute autre les traces des conflits du 20ème siècle, avec une pièce sur les conflits armés écrite à la veille de la seconde guerre mondiale. Un deuxième : le théâtre rend le passé présent puisque Boillot a demandé à Irène Bonnaud de retraduire le texte de Brecht dans une langue plus orale et abrupte que des traductions qui commençaient à dater. La musique aussi sera réorchestrée : à partir de la composition originale de Paul Dessau, Jonathan Pontier et son électro-acoustique mélangeront les époques et les genres pour donner à entendre l’aventure de cette femme qui dans sa carriole tente de survivre au milieu du chaos de la guerre de Trente ans. Un troisième : la fable de Brecht est bien intemporelle et universelle. Portée par dix comédiens, elle substituera à la Grande Histoire celle des individus, du peuple, de ceux qui traversent les champs de bataille avec leurs malheurs mais aussi toute leur vitalité.
