« Le 21 mars 89, Olivier Rolin a reçu plus de 500 journaux venus du monde entier. Il les a lus, les a traduits ou fait traduire, et en a extrait d’innombrables histoires évoquant des événements qui se sont produits aux quatre coins de la planète ce jour-là, qu’il a rassemblées et mises en perspective avec des grands textes classiques comme L’Iliade ou Le Tour du monde en 80 jours. C’est ainsi qu’est né ce superbe roman, L’Invention du monde, qui traduit le monde dans une langue littéraire, et comme toutes les grandes œuvres, propose une réflexion sur l’écriture. C’était un défi que de le monter au théâtre. Pour tenter, comme Olivier Rolin, d’inventer le monde, il fallait naturellement tenter d’inventer une nouvelle forme de théâtre. C’est ce que j’essaye de faire à chaque nouvelle mise en scène. Alors, pour traduire la polyphonie naturelle du roman, théorisée par Bakhtine, et son ambition syncrétique portée par le Cercle d’Iéna, j’ai choisi de recourir aux arts frères du théâtre : le cirque, la musique, la vidéo…
Une des fonctions du théâtre est de se colleter le monde
Même si les histoires datent de 89, le roman parle d’aujourd’hui. L’évolution du monde ne suit pas forcément la temporalité d’internet. Une des fonctions du théâtre est bien de se colleter le monde, et ce qu’il nous faut réussir avec Nicolas Bigards, c’est de faire théâtre de ce roman. Nous nous sommes tournés vers la forme des origines, l’invention du théâtre en occident : la tragédie grecque. Le narrateur quelque peu séducteur du roman deviendra donc une sorte de coryphée avec autour de lui cette foule du chœur. Et comme à travers ses histoires, le roman convoque une population nombreuse et hétéroclite, je voulais le signifier sur le plateau. On y retrouvera donc un rassemblement d’amateurs et de professionnels, de comédiens, de musiciens, de circassiens pour beaucoup venant de cette terre de mélange du 9-3. »
