« Je me moque des chanteurs parce que je les admire »
« Quand les deux directeurs du Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Olivier Poubelle et Olivier Mantei, m’ont demandé si je ne voulais pas monter un spectacle musical dans lequel je chanterais, je n’ai pas hésité ! J’ai toujours eu envie de me lancer dans l’exercice du récital avec pianiste. Cela remonte à loin… Vers l’âge de vingt ans, j’ai commencé à être attiré par l’opéra, car j’y trouvais la démesure qui manquait, à mon sens, au théâtre. Des cantatrices comme Gwyneth Jones ou Leonie Rysanek étaient de véritables bêtes de scène, incarnant un mélange de folie et de virtuosité. J’ai ensuite mis en scène un certain nombre d’opéras et j’ai été amené à chanter moi-même dans des opérettes. Je regrette cependant qu’aujourd’hui les mises en scène d’opéras soient souvent trop réalistes – on dirait des téléfilms ! Dans ce domaine, ce qui m’a aussi fasciné, c’est le récital de grandes voix accompagnées uniquement par un piano. Dans cette volonté de recréer tout un monde avec presque rien, il y avait pour moi quelque chose d’à la fois vain et sublime. Avec le Récital emphatique, je redonne vie à cet univers de manière parodique. Je me moque des chanteurs parce que je les admire. J’y caricature tous leurs défauts !
Grandiloquent et prétentieux !
Habillé en robe de diva, je chante des extraits de Saint-Saëns, Rameau, Bizet, Gershwin, mais je danse aussi sur des passages de Samson et Dalila de Saint-Saëns et je déclame des alexandrins tirés du Phèdre de Racine. Tout cela est terriblement grandiloquent et prétentieux ! J’ai la chance d’avoir un pianiste, Mathieu El Fassi, qui possède suffisamment d’humour pour accompagner toutes mes vociférations. Le fait de donner un tel récital dans un lieu comme les Bouffes du Nord, sorte de théâtre à l’abandon très fin de règne, a d’ailleurs tout son sens. Je peux enfin vous dévoiler mon prochain projet lié à la musique : ce sera la mise en scène, en 2013, d’une opérette à l’Opéra-Comique. »
