Comment avez-vous décidé de reprendre ce spectacle créé il y a trente ans ?
Michel Raskine : En 2008, je savais déjà que j’allais monter Juste la fin du monde au Français et une pièce avec les élèves de l’ENSATT. Mais il m’était difficile de ne pas travailler pour mon Théâtre du Point du Jour. Cependant, étant données les deux autres mises en scène à régler, il me fallait trouver un spectacle léger. Cherchant un texte sur le site de La Chartreuse par ordre alphabétique d’auteurs, je suis tombé sur celui-là ! De plus, au moment où j’ai décidé de monter ce texte, je tournais autour du XVIIIème siècle, que j’aime beaucoup depuis longtemps. De Rousseau, j’avais lu très tôt Les Confessions et Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire et j’aimais beaucoup cette figure à la complexité phénoménale. J’ai donc décidé avec Marief de monter ce spectacle qui met ses pas dans celui d’un autre, créé en 1978 par Desarthe au Petit Odéon et dont l’impact, le succès et la longévité ont été extraordinaires.
Avez-vous réadapté le texte de Chartreux et Jourdheuil ?
M. R. : D’abord, je n’avais pas le temps d’en refaire le montage. Ensuite, je connais bien Rousseau mais je n’en suis pas spécialiste et je ne me sentais pas capable de refaire le parcours intégral de lecture et de collage. Lorsque nous avons lu le texte avec Marief, il aurait pu ne pas nous plaire, se démoder. Or il est composé avec une telle science de l’arrangement des morceaux que nous n’y avons pas touché, sauf à l’enrichir, presque clandestinement, de passages qui me plaisaient beaucoup, comme les sublimes pages des Confessions sur la promenade en montagne ou celles, puisque nous avons créé le spectacle à Lyon, où Rousseau dit qu’il ne connaît pas de ville plus dégoûtante et plus perverse en Europe !
Quel Rousseau avez-vous choisi d’incarner ?
M. R. : Nous avons décidé d’un Jean-Jacques âgé, l’ermite d’Ermenonville habillé en Arménien, pris entre nature et solitude. Marief a levé un lièvre formidable en remarquant le parallèle entre Rousseau et Thomas Bernhard, leur commune négation du plaisir et du bonheur, leur éternelle misanthropie, leurs difficiles rapports avec les autres qui les empoisonnent. Rousseau est un imprécateur, comme Bernhard.

Curieux de mettre en scène un homme qui détestait autant le théâtre…
M. R. : Chez Rousseau, je crois que cette détestation est à mettre au compte de son personnage. Ce n’est pas tant quelqu’un qui déteste le théâtre que quelqu’un qui en parle avec passion et fureur. Il y a de la dialectique dans la pensée et on la retrouve dans le spectacle. L’axe central du spectacle est justement cette question du théâtre et l’identification de Jean-Jacques à Alceste : en cela aussi, le texte est d’emblée théâtral.
Pourquoi avoir choisi une femme pour jouer Rousseau ?
M. R. : Souvent, avec le grand âge, la frontière entre le mâle et la femelle s’estompe et Marief joue le Rousseau de la fin, celui des Rêveries. L’autre avantage d’une femme pour un rôle d’homme est d’éloigner le stéréotype de l’image d’Epinal et des clichés, souvent récurrents quand les figures sont célèbres. Certes, on a peu d’images représentant Rousseau mais Marief permet d’oublier l’image qu’on en a. Les spectateurs découvrent le côté touchant de cette tête à claques incroyablement misanthrope. Le costume de Marief est fortement daté mais le personnage qu’elle compose est hybride, contradictoire. Or Jean-Jacques était le roi de la contradiction !
